Every serious buyer asks us about certification before they ask about price, and they are right to. A compliance problem does not show up as a bad review. It shows up as a container sitting at customs, or a marketplace pulling your listing.

One practical note before the detail. If you sell into more than one region, do not source to the lowest common denominator. Certify to LFGB and you have covered the hardest case, which means one specification and one production run instead of two.
FDA and LFGB are not the same test
Buyers often treat these as interchangeable stamps. They are not, and the difference is the reason we test to both.

The sensory test is the part worth understanding. LFGB asks whether the silicone passes any detectable taste or smell into the food it touches. Low-grade silicone with cheap fillers often fails there even when it survives basic migration testing.
That is why we treat an LFGB report as the meaningful signal. It is harder to pass, and it correlates closely with the thing your customer will actually notice, which is whether their grilled sandwich tastes faintly of rubber.
Product certificates and factory certificates are different things
This distinction trips up more first-time importers than any other, and suppliers rarely correct it.
FDA, LFGB and CE describe the product and the material it is made from. They say the item touching food is safe. BSCI and ISO 9001 describe the factory: its labour practices and its quality management system. They say nothing directly about the silicone in your carton.
You need both, for different reasons. Product certificates get your goods through customs and off a compliance officer's desk. Factory audits are what large retail accounts demand before they will list you at all.
A buyer for a European chain once told us their category manager would not open a sample box until the BSCI report was on file. That is increasingly normal. If you are pitching supermarkets rather than marketplaces, treat the factory audit as a gate, not a bonus.

The design patent line matters more than most buyers expect. If you build a private-label SKU on a shape your supplier does not own, a competitor's takedown request can remove your listing overnight, and you will have inventory you cannot sell. Ask whoever you buy from whether the design is theirs to license.
The questions importers actually ask us
Is food-grade silicone genuinely safe at microwave temperatures?
Yes, within its rated range. Our silicone is rated from -40°C to +230°C, which covers freezer storage through full microwave heating. Problems arise with uncertified silicone that has never been tested to a range at all, which is why a missing temperature spec is a warning in itself.
What about the PTFE non-stick coating?
Fair question, and we would rather answer it directly than dodge it. PTFE is a standard non-stick coating used across cookware, and it is stable at normal cooking temperatures. The concerns you may have read about relate to overheating well beyond typical use, which is a scenario a microwave crisper pan does not reach in a 3 to 5 minute cook. If your market is sensitive to it, tell us during specification and we will discuss the options rather than pretend the question was never asked.
Is BPA relevant to silicone cookware?
BPA is associated with certain plastics rather than silicone, so it is not the right question for this material, though buyers ask it constantly because listings have trained them to. The meaningful checks for silicone are food-grade certification and a tested temperature range.
Do I need Prop 65 for the United States?
If you sell into California, it is worth addressing, since it carries its own labelling obligations separate from FDA compliance. Raise it early, because it can affect artwork and packaging rather than the product itself.
The documents to request, in one list
Copy this into your supplier email. A factory with real testing sends most of it the same day.
- The FDA test report for the food-contact material, not a self-declaration.
- The LFGB test report, including the sensory test result.
- The CE documentation if you are entering the EU.
- The BSCI audit report and ISO 9001 certificate for the factory.
- A material breakdown naming the silicone grade, the heat-conducting plate and the coating.
- The temperature range and minimum microwave wattage on the spec sheet.
- Confirmation of who owns the design, and any patent numbers.
- Packaging and carton details, since compliance marks often have to appear on artwork.
Nothing on that list is unusual to ask for. That is the point. A supplier who finds it burdensome is telling you something useful before you have spent any money.
How to tell whether a certificate will hold up
Not every document that arrives as a PDF means what the sender implies. Five checks catch most of the problems.
1. A report, not a certificate image
You want the full test report from a recognised laboratory, with test items and results, rather than a decorative one-page certificate or a logo pasted into a brochure.
2. The scope matches your product
A report covering a different item from the same factory does not cover yours. Check that the tested article is the one you are buying, in the same material and colour family.
3. The date is current
Testing ages. An old report on a product whose formulation has changed since is close to worthless.
4. The applicant is the factory you are buying from
If the name on the report belongs to a company you have never heard of, ask why. Sometimes there is a good answer. Often it means the goods come from somewhere the trader is not telling you about.
5. The lab can be verified
Recognised laboratories issue reports with reference numbers that can be checked. Reluctance to let you verify is the clearest signal you will get.
One importer came to us after a shipment from a previous supplier was held at entry over food-contact documentation that did not match the goods. The product itself may well have been fine. The paperwork was not, and the delay cost more than the price advantage that won the order in the first place.
Why certification is also a sales asset
Compliance is usually framed as a cost. On the listing page it behaves like a conversion tool.
The single biggest hesitation shoppers have about this category is safety. Is it really safe to heat this in a microwave? Stating FDA and LFGB certification plainly, with the temperature range next to it, answers that doubt at the moment it appears.

When to raise compliance in the buying process
Timing matters almost as much as the documents themselves. Compliance raised late turns into rework, and rework in this category means new tooling or new artwork.
Raise it at the enquiry stage, before samples. Tell the supplier which markets you sell into in your first message, and ask for the test reports then. It costs you one sentence and it filters out unsuitable suppliers before either side spends time.
Confirm it again at sample approval. The sample you sign off is the reference for mass production, so that is the moment to check that the certified material and the sampled material are the same thing, and to have the temperature range and wattage written into the specification rather than left in an email.
Handle labelling before artwork is finalised. Compliance marks, material statements and market-specific notices often have to appear on the retail box. Discovering that after the box is printed is an expensive way to learn it, and it delays a shipment that is otherwise ready.
For reference, our own timeline runs 7 to 10 days for samples and 25 to 30 days for mass production after approval, so a compliance question raised at the start costs nothing, while the same question raised at inspection can cost you a season.
What non-compliance actually costs
Buyers underestimate this because the failure is rare but expensive, rather than frequent and cheap.
The first cost is the goods themselves, held, rejected or destroyed. The second is the sales window: seasonal stock that clears customs late may have missed the demand it was bought for. The third is the account, since a marketplace suspension or a retailer delisting outlasts the individual shipment.
Against that, a full set of test reports is a request you can make in one email. This is the cheapest insurance available to an importer, which is why we lead with it rather than treat it as paperwork to be produced at the end.
